One of my favorite classic images by Alfred Steiglitz was taken in New York City in the early 2oth century. It was one of those images that captures the mood and gives a great sense of place. The image reached out to me, and over the years, I thought about it more. I wanted to pay tribute to it but in a way that captured the spirit of the New York City I found myself in, in the mid to late 20th century. I thought about it a lot, then began wandering and shooting. This is the one I decided upon.
Then, as now, the city is very different than in early 20th century, the image is day, not night, the area is well known, and the steam and smoke are produced not organically but mechanically. However, the mystery, emotions, feelings, and the stress are all there along with the more common elements of life mid century…….what do you think?
